Archaeology of Mesopotamia

Course Description:

This course will cover the subject of the geography of Mesopotamia and the archaeology of Mesopotamia from the stone Ages to the Persian conquest in 539 BC. It will discuss the Neolithic cultures of Mesopotamia, the development of cities and the rise of the empires including the Sumerian city states, old Babylonian empire, the old Assyrian and the other ethnic cultures. The new Assyrian empire and the New Babylonian empire and the coming of the Persian in 539BC. With special reference to the economic, religious, social, military and legal aspects of these empires. The question of the invention of writing will also be discussed.
