Course Name:

Analysis of Archaeological Materials

Course Description:

This course teaches students how to identify and investigate archaeological artefacts of diverse materials (specifically metallic, lithic, vitreous and/or organic, but not ceramic) with particular emphasis on the use of laboratory-based techniques of examination. The course acquaints the student with a number of analytical techniques and methods, which are useful in the investigation of archaeological materials. After the principles and basic procedures of each method has been introduced, the potentials and limitations of these applications will be discussed through specific case studies. It will provide students with an informed appreciation of the methodologies used to answer specific archaeological questions. By the end of the course students should be able to define an archaeological question, choose the appropriate techniques for the analysis of any archaeological material remains and put together a coherent research design.
